Deep Time - 3 films for BBC

It was a thrill to work with my old colleague Richard Fisher on this 3 part series of films about Deep Time for the BBC. The unfathomable age of the Earth has always fascinated me and we hoped to instil these films with a sense of wonder. The first film has had (at the time of writing) over 700,000 views on the BBC News YouTube feed - not bad for a little film about a bunch of rocks!

Scroll down to watch the 3 films….

  1. the Man who discovered the Abyss of Time.

“You can put your finger on the gap where 60 Million Years passed without any trace being recorded.”

The first of three short films I made for the BBC about deep time - in which we visit Siccar Point, a place of huge significance to geology, not to mention our understanding of long-term time.

2. the Art of thinking in Deep Time.

“… our lives on this Earth are so brief - like the flash of sunlight on the surface of an ocean.”

FIlm 2 is a profile of the artist Katie Paterson featuring her Future Library - which contains books that won't be read until 2114 - and Requiem - a room that contains all of Earth's history: 370 vials of crushed powder, each 21g, from ancient fossils to a tree branch from Hiroshima.

3. the people from the 22nd Century living among us.

Film 3 of our BBC deep time series explores how our generational ties stretch far further across time than first appears.
